In Character Information
Name: Izaya Orihara
Series: Durarara!
Canon Standing: Post-Anime (Episode 24)/Light Novel Volume 3
Age: 23
Birthday & Astrology Sign: May 4th, Taurus
Arcana: Hierophant (Reversed)
Reversed, however, represents misleading or dubious advice, poor counsel, slander and propaganda. Beware of first impressions. Distortion of truth and a bad time for signing agreements. Misleading advertisements. Unconventionality and rejection of family values. (Source)
Personality:
Fundamentally, Izaya claims to be a philanthropist: He loves humans, but not individual humans, instead he only loves the whole collective human race. This is questionable, because Izaya’s idea of love is to mentally torture them and antagonize them. His twisted ideas are presumably derived from his own relationship with love. He himself doesn't feel the romantic attraction between people, and its questionable if he feels love at all; he just isn't interested in things like that (but word of god says that he has a natural sex drive). The love for human reactions is reinforced when Izaya claims that he can do his job as an informant forever, where he can watch people’s reactions and provoke them into things he wants them to do.
The only exception to his twisted love is Shizuo Heiwajima, with whom Izaya has shared a hated relationship since the moment they met. Izaya is extremely antagonist towards Shizuo, purposely nicknaming him “Shizu-chan” when he knows the other hates nicknames. He also frames Shizuo for crimes the Shizuo didn’t commit, as well as various pre-planned schemes to stop Shizuo from chasing him (Running Shizuo over with a truck, and then paying the driver in their confrontation). He dislikes Shizuo for being too dumb to manipulate. Even so, Izaya manages to be extremely calm when interacting with Shizuo, still calling him nicknames and countering Shizuo’s anger with smarmy words. The other, more positive exception is his only ‘friend’, Shinra. Izaya values his friendship with Shinra, but will refuse to comment if asked. He in fact, feels guilty over this, as an event in the past resulted in Shinra being stabbed and Izaya taking up the job of informant in order to take revenge on said person.
Izaya is a lying liar who lies, both in his role as an informant, and as well as a person. To him, there’s no shame in lying about his identity in order to manipulate others to get the information he wants. It also doesn’t seem like Izaya even has a shame, either. He also pretends to be someone else out of security, as it's understandably safer to operate under someone else's name or an alias than go around dropping his true identity, as he’s known in Ikebukuro for selling rumours. Izaya also doesn't believe in trust, or at least, doesn't have a very strong positive opinion of it, perhaps as an extension of his view. He sees the humans he loves as playthings, exploiting their desires and wants for his own personal gain. Izaya’s own ideas of love also stem from his action. He takes the chess analogy to a literal sense, playing a game that is a combination of Reversi, Shogi, and Chess on a Go board that only he understands. Each of these game types represents the three warring factions in Ikebukuro, while Izaya watches over the board like a god, laughing maniacally while he observes the pieces.
Izaya’s consideration by Durarara fandom as a troll is partly accurate, as Izaya does many things simply because he can. This is on top of his god complex where he pulls many people's strings and often all at once. The way he approaches it seems very random or hard to predict, as he likes to take things in a hands on approach. Although he can provoke war by simply passing on information, he chooses to greet Mikado when he first arrives in Ikebukuro or showing up in places where people would never expect him to be, even though he prefers to take a more background place to observe. He is presumably the closest thing to an antagonist the Durarara series has. As part of his plan, Izaya distributes the passwords to the Dollars website, creating the popularity the gang enjoys in Ikebukuro. It is Izaya who organized the abduction that creates conflict between the opposing gangs the Blue Square and the Yellow Scarves.
But just for his own sake of enjoyment, he talks a girl into suicide, destroys a girl’s cellphone, and later uses the same girl’s different boyfriend as a trampoline. Obviously, these things have no factor on his planning but are instead because he felt like it. He has many whimsy, childlike urges, such as spinning in his chair or making motorcycle noises when the opportunity arises. This childishness does not distract from the fact that Izaya is a master planner, however. His ultimate plan is to start a war, awakening the sleeping Dullahan Celty, whom he believes will become a valkyrie. Although Izaya claims to be an atheist, he seems to fear the nothingness in death. Since valkyries only take heroes to Valhalla after they die, Izaya wants to make sure that the only person who wins the war in Ikebukuro is him. Therefore, he will be guaranteed a place in Valhalla.
For the most part, Izaya is calm and comfortable in his role, appearing confident and almost friendly to people that don’t know him. The calm is partly because he is very, very, very good at reading people and perceiving their reactions, as well as it being infuriating when one's enemy is extremely calm. Aside from the fact that he talks a lot, Izaya tends to be very unassuming and always speaks casually. Izaya is almost always smiling when talking to people, even though this look tends to be the look of smarmy gits. He is adaptable and good at pretending to be something he isn’t. For example, he keeps contact with a girl under the guise of Nakura, convincing her that he’ll meet with her at some point and then selling her information to someone else. He also keeps a false persona online as a female chat moderator named Kanra.
Throughout the series, Izaya is almost always one step ahead of others to motivate his plans, but he doesn’t have everything together. For example, in the final episode of the anime, it is hinted that Izaya as a complex around Shizuo. Izaya doesn’t seem to like Shizuo is because the latter is well liked and surrounded by people while the former is not. This company makes Izaya vindictive and jealous. What this also hints at, however, is that he is lonely. Izaya acknowledges that it is his actions that cause him to be alone, but feels the repercussions of his own actions. For example, later in the series, Izaya is not invited to a hot-pot party that all the other characters are. He decides to have his own; only to be rejected by his secretary, becoming truly alone.
Of course, not all of Izaya’s plans go according to plan, and that’s how he ends up socked in the face in the first place.
